Having made a number of changes following Thursday nights gruelling tie at Atalanta, Leipzig had to endure some sustained spells of Leverkusen pressure.

Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi was forced into a save from Edmond Tapsoba after his strike from a freekick was deflected late in the first period.

Moussa Diaby forced Gulacsi in the Leipzig goal into another save later on while Patrick Schick sent a header wide when he should have done better.

With Tedesco having seen enough, he introduced his star man Christopher Nkunku who immediately changed the intensity of proceedings for his Italian coach.

His darting run almost led to an opening for Willi Orban, his strike smacking into the inside of the post and away.

With Leipzig then enjoying the better of the proceedings following some smart tactical alterations from Tedesco they soon found the breakthrough.

From a promising Leverkusen move Leipzig nicked the ball and broke smartly with their array of attacking talent. Nkunku had the ball and fed Szoboslai who finished smartly with the outside of his boot, albeit via a deflection.

The result means Tedesco’s side leap-frog their Sunday opponents into third and cap what is one of the club’s most impressive ever weeks.
